The Grade 2 students created dioramas about a celebration, festival or ritual of their choice. The dioramas included many of the following features: special colors, decorations, activities, games, special food, dates, a purpose or meaning and symbols.

For the final assessment in our current unit of inquiry, students planned and created their own celebration. The children needed to have a meaning or purpose for their celebration or ritual, symbols, activities, games, decorations, special colors, a song or dance, a visual display and it needed a date. Grade 3 students came down to enjoy our celebrations and they had a wonderful time. Here are some photos of the 2G students sharing their learning.
Dear 2G Parents,
I wanted to share a brief update. First, 2G students will have their individual photos for the yearbook on Thursday, December 11th at 2:00 PM. Next, I would like to remind everyone that our winter class party will occur on Wednesday, December 17th at 2:00 PM. Regarding this party, there is a white envelope in your child's backpack from the class parents for you to select which item you would like to bring. Please check for this envelope tonight, and return it as soon as you can. Thanks. I would also like to share a special thanks to the 2G & 2R class parents for organizing this party, planning the 2G/2R student gifts, and for picking up the gifts for the children we support for the Angel Tree Orphanage. Sincere regards, Steve Here are some photos of the children working in Math Centers. Students had the choice of which centers they wanted to work in for our Shapes and Space math strand in our curriculum. Some centers included using Geoboards to make 2D shapes, using straws or toothpicks to make 3D shapes, shape sorts, using the iPad app "Explain Everything" to create instructional videos of 3D shapes, and more... Students completed the math centers with a reflection activity. Dear 2G Parents,
We are one week into our new Unit of Inquiry. The central idea of this unit is "People recognize important personal and cultural events through celebrations and traditions." Our lines of inquiry are the following: 1) what traditions are 2) what, why and when we celebrate 3) similarities and differences between traditions and celebrations across cultures. To help us learn more about this central idea and lines of inquiry, we would like to invite parents into school to share about celebrations and/or festivals from their home country. In the recent years, parents came into lead a mini-presentation about this topic and the students truly enjoyed this while learning a lot at the same time. A parent presentation about a celebration may include some, but not all, of the following aspects: special food, clothes, music, decorations, the meaning or purpose of the celebration, art, decorations, games, activities, dances and symbols. Please let Mr. Heere and/or Ms. Waldman know if you would like to come into BIFS anytime before the winter break to lead a presentation. If you would like to co-lead it with your child or another parent this would be great too. Finally, please let us know if you would be willing to share your presentation with both classes...this would be greatly appreciated, Thanks for your consideration. Students have almost completed their model houses. These homes were planned and designed by the students to reflect geography, culture and climate. The student explained these connections in their written reflections. We are also making video clips of the construction process. The kids will upload the video clips and photos onto their Weebly digital portfolios while sharing a reflection of their learning.
2G and 2R worked together to create posters based on their Spelling sorts for our Words Their Way Spelling program. The students all needed to search through books to find more words which fit in with their sorts.
